Aging, or something more? A calm checklist

Some changes are age. Some have a cause and a treatment. Here is how to tell.

Updated August 2026·5-minute read

The most common mistake with an older dog is to file everything under “just getting old.” Most of what slows a dog down gradually is ordinary. But a few patterns are not about age at all — they have causes, and most of those causes have treatments. Telling the two apart is the whole job of this page.

The pattern that usually means age

Ordinary aging is gradual and symmetrical. It creeps in over a season, not overnight, and it touches the whole dog rather than one leg or one side. A little more sleep, a slightly shorter walk, a preference for the floor over the sofa — steady, slow, and even.

The signs that belong with your vet

Book a veterinary visit — not a supplement — if you see any of these. They are not “normal aging”; they are signs with causes.

  • A sudden change instead of a gradual one
  • Limping, or stiffness on one side worse than the other
  • Obvious pain, yelping, or trouble rising that gets worse quickly
  • Appetite loss, big changes in drinking, or unexplained weight change
  • New confusion, pacing at night, or getting lost in familiar rooms

A daily supplement is not a diagnosis. BounceBack is nutritional support for everyday routines — not a drug, and not a substitute for veterinary care. For an existing condition or ongoing medication, your veterinarian decides.

Where a daily routine fits

A nutritional supplement is not a diagnosis and not a treatment. It sits in the ordinary, healthy-aging lane: a small daily step for an adult or senior dog whose routine has simply started to look different. If a vet is involved for a diagnosed condition, they lead — anything you add goes past them first.
